Gallery Description
African textiles and sculptures are famous all round the world. Their magnificent beauty lies in their simplicity. The wide range and the different patterns of textiles are becoming increasingly popular world over. Over the centuries the weavers, dyers, and other textile artists of Africa have created an amazing and exciting array of textiles in a huge variety of styles. Some of the most popular textiles include adinkra, kente and bogolan. The best of them perhaps is adire from Nigeria and aso-oke from Yoruba. However, these textiles are fast becoming rare. Many are interested in collecting pieces of these textiles as artifacts. You can find many of them in display in the museums of Europe for the benefit of connoisseurs of textile art.
African Sculptures indicate the passion for art among Africans. From their early days, children are trained in art in one form or the other. The greatest emphasis in anything they do is on aesthetics. Good craftsmanship, balance, attention to finish, fine detail, and the treatment of the human form as an idealized image, in the prime of life and radiating strength and health, are among the common denominators in much of the African sculptures. These are the elements the Africans constantly strive to achieve in all their artistic pursuits. The common work of sculptures includes numerous art objects made for ceremonial, magical, and decorative purposes such as weapons, tools, textiles, utensils, implements, and undecorated items of daily use.
In Africa art plays a pivotal role in even a common man’s life. Art is a form of communication with the supernatural and with one another. Art indicates the level of development, the status of its owner, the knowledge of its creator. In Africa art is used to transmit rules, laws, moral codes, teach history.
The most significant of African arts are the African masks. Our gallery brings a collection of beautiful African sculptures, textiles and other works of art.
