Gallery Description
Who has not heard of Anne Geddes and her beautiful babies? The world has been seeing those innocent babies beautifully captured in their most natural state by this talented photographer for years now.
Anne Geddes, an Australian by nationality, and now based in New Zealand, started her career as a photographer at 25. She realized early in her career, the strong love she had for infants; she believed that these infants, through their blissful silence, convey many messages to adults struggling for peace. Seeing the babies being photographed in bright frilly colorful dresses, in typical postures was something that she detested. She revolutionized the whole process, by photographing these kids in the most unassuming positions that they get into in their natural state – the state of sleeping, in the most appropriate costume for an infant – unclothed. People loved it, for it oozed beauty, peace and simplicity like never seen before.
Initially she used black and white photography for the aesthetic appeal in the contrast seen that it brings out. But, it is not just the aesthetics she looks at; it has a strong social commentary to it. She brought out her love for humanity as a race undivided by skin color, in her photographs by bringing together white and black kids, photographing them cuddled up next to each other, exploring each other, interacting with each other. She moved on to capture the beauty of these infants nurtured in the hands of Mother Nature. She would place them amidst beautiful flowers, or dress them up with large petal flowers, leafs and even fruits and vegetables and capture the innocent smile that plays on the faces of these babies enjoying their state. These pictures have seen a kind of acceptance and love that no other photographers’ pictures have ever seen.
Anne Geddes photographs show her deep and intense love for Infants and nature. She believes that much of her success has to do with the fact that any person, of any origin, country, race or religion has one common love- the infant. What many people do not know about her and what she chooses to keep it unknown, is that a significant portion of her sales goes to organization working towards prevention of child abuse and neglect.
