Gallery Description
The inventor of basketball is Dr. James Naismith who was born in 1861 in Ontario, Canada. The ancestor of this game was a simple game called duck-on-a-rock, which was played outside Naismith’s one-room schoolhouse. After serving as the Athletic director at McGill University, Canada he went on to YMCA Training School in Massachusetts, USA in 1891. While he was with YMCA, he felt the need to devise a game that could be played indoors with less space and a game that would require skill, not merely physical strength. And from this need was born the game of basketball. The very first game of basketball was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as goals.

Naismith watched his game, the basketball being popularized in the many countries by the YMCA movement as early as 1893. Basketball was introduced at the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Basketball gained popularity quite fast due to its simple equipment requirements, ability to play indoors, simple rules and competitiveness. In May 1901, several schools including the famous ones like Yale and Harvard formed an Intercollegiate Basketball League. The formation of leagues and conferences brought in more uniformity and discipline to the game. By early 1900’s basketball had become a very popular sport with leagues traveling across the country for championship games.

Few of the most famous teams during the time was The Buffalo Germans, a team that won 111 straight games in a short time period of 3 years, and the Original Celtics, a team that pioneered the development of many tactics in basketball. One of the all-black teams, which made a big impact, was the Harlem Globetrotters, which was founded in1927. In mid 1930s, the National Basketball League was formed to formalize the competitions between the leagues. This was later renamed to National Basketball Association(NBA). This association continued to be the major professional basketball league for about 2 decades after it’s founding.

During the 1990s, interest in the game soared. One of the most famous players of the time was Michael Jordan, who is considered to be one of best players ever. During his time, his team the Chicago Bulls won 6 NBA championships. Other great players of this time were Hakeem Olajuwon, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Karl Malone, John Stockton, and Shaquille O'Neal.

Basketball continues to be the favorite game of many people worldwide as a game that builds strength, stamina, discipline and above all teamwork. Our gallery of basketball paintings brings to you the famous players like Michael Jordan and famous paintings from artists like Michael Lewis.
