Gallery Description
Hailing from Jamaica, Bernard Stanley Hoyes’, was supported in his artistic pursuits from an early age of nine years by his mother. To help maintain the household and support his creative efforts, his mother sold wood-carvings and watercolors to visitors at the Jamaica Tourist Board. At the age of 15, he learned art formally in Jamaica itself but soon moved to New York to continue his art endeavors. He attended evening classes at the Art Students League, excelling quickly. Under the apprenticeship of established artists such as Norman Lewis, Huie Lee Smith and John Torres, Hoyes matured as a painter and a sculptor. He then received a scholarship to complete his academic studies at Vermont Academy, where he was instrumental in the development of formal art Department. His works were featured in Vermont Life, Stage IV and Vermont 70 Magazines and at graduation was given a solo exhibition at the Shepardson Center Gallery on Campus. Upon graduation Hoyes received the Frederick Stanley Art Award.
From here he moved on to Oakland, San Francisco where he participated in the Graduate art show and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in painting and design. He set up a studio across the bay in San Francisco and became a full time artist. In 1975 he was participant in the " Black Expo", and assemblage of nationwide Afro-American artists. During this period Hoyes worked intensively on his "RAG SERIES," encompassing over 150 pieces. “RAG NOUVEAU”, a landmark painting in this series has become a signature piece for the artist He has contributed tremendously to the development of African-American culture through his art. His elegant "KWANZAA HOLIDAY" card series celebrates African-American holiday with functional art was created around this time. Some of the other murals created by him are "BLACK FOLK ART IN AMERICA" and the recently acclaimed, "IN THE SPIRIT OF CONTRIBUTION", dedicated to both African American and Hispanic people who have made note worthy contributions to the building of America.
Hoyes is a master of colorful and rhythmical compositions. His works are spiritually significant, visually engrossing and powerfully expressive. Hoyes says that he paints "from an intuitive point of view". Each completed painting of his suggests the composition and content for the next. In his work color becomes personified and are used in various combinations to express national as well as spiritual connotations.
