Botanical paintings are not some beautiful personal response r impression of a flower. It is the illustration of the structure of plants, their colors and textures and patterns of growth and aspects of their life cycles. It seeks to describe facts visually using certain conventions. The idea is to balance between artistic and technical values and produce an integrated whole art.
So why take the pains of drawing the flower when the camera could do that in a click? Cameras can capture only one view of the flower; a painting on the other hand can show different aspects of the flower simultaneously, show ranges of variations can selectively enhance or diminish the features. The idea of a botanical painting is to answer the technical questions.
Botanical painters often are often art or biology students who specialize in illustrative art. They undergo training in biological illustrations, learning botanical anatomy and classifications. As the form of art is gaining acceptance both from both the audience and the makers of art, new art groups are being formed. The field on its own is huge, the illustrations varying from simple sketches and diagrams, to dissection drawings to detailed pencil drawing to which the different layers of colors and texture are added.
