Boxing is the manly art of self-defense, where each person tries to hit the other with gloved fists at the same time defending himself against the blows from the other person. Boxing originated when one man first raised his fist against another, and these fist fights have continued over the ages. The ancient Greeks believed that fist fighting was one of the games played by the gods on Olympus and thus it was included as part of the Oympic games in 688 BC. This sport of boxing became quite popular in Rome. People started covering their fists with leather bands for protection. Some used metal fillings within the leather bands, resulting in very cruel and bloody fights. The popularity of boxing came down, until it saw the days of glory during the 18th century in England.
The competitions at those times were not organized ones, with rules and discipline. As a result, the fights resembled street brawls and not a sport. Jack Broughton of England drew his own set of rules for this game and these were recognized in 1743. This brought about some amount of discipline to the game removing the cruelty and blood-shed from it. These rules have been modified since then, but even now there are different sets of rules and regulations in different countries. There is no true world-wide governing body to control this sport and hence each country has developed it own styles and rules for this game.
Amateur fights are of 3 rounds and professional fights vary between 4 to 15 rounds, 12 being the most commonly accepted one. The boxing ring is a square area, the size of which is specified and enclosed on each side by 3 or 4 ropes. The competitors wear leather gloves on their hands and the weight of this glove also keeps varying. The winner is decided by the judges, who keep the scores or the referee or both. There is also the option of knockout, where one competitor punches the other to the floor and he cannot get up in ten seconds, then the former is considered as the winner.
There are different classes of boxing in existence now, depending on the weight of the competitors. Some of the classes are flyweight, lightweight, heavyweight, featherweight etc. Because of the violent nature of this game, it has gone through many controversies and bans. Despite all these, the game is quite popular all over the world. And credit for the popularity goes to the world famous boxing champions like Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Henry Armstrong etc. Our gallery of boxing paintings brings to you paintings of these stars and also excellent and memorable moments in the sport of boxing.
