Gallery Description
Butterflies are the most colorful and delicate creatures on earth. The term was first used for a particular European species, the yellow brimstone. Initially it was called “butter-colored fly” later shortened to butterfly. Scientists group butterflies and moths in the category, or order, known as Lepidoptera, which means "scaled wings." There are about 28.000 species of Butterflies all over the world. They range from 1/8 inch to almost 12 inches in size. All butterflies have six legs and feet. The beauty of the insect is not just the amazing hues that its wings possess but also the fact that the wings are symmetrical. Butterflies use their feet to taste their food, their antennas to smell and their proboscis (straw-like structure) to drink nectar and juices. An interesting fact is that butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees. So often, Butterflies bask in the sun to absorb heat. It has been studied that Butterflies prefer flowers that are pink, yellow, red, or purple and those that have single petals. Butterflies have a very short life span. They can utmost live to a year, not longer. Just like no 2 human beings are exactly alike, so is it true for butterflies. One cannot find a butterfly that looks exactly like another. Our gallery brings for you a beautiful and colorful collection of butterfly pictures, prints and posters.
