Gallery Description

Edouard Manet (1832-1883)

Born into a wealthy Parisian family, Manet always showed a propensity toward drawing and the arts and believed that he was destined to be a painter. Though his father, August Manet, a magistrate, wanted him to get into law, his uncle Charles Fournier encouraged his interest in art and took to him Louvre. Manet always believed that ones art should reflect ideas and ideals of the present rather then the past.
Manet was enthused by the modernity that many artists and reformists were trying to introduce in the art scene in Paris and he became one of the leading and renowned impressionist painters. Manet headed the Impressionists group consisting of the likes of Monet, Renoir, Degas and other famous impressionists. They would meet and debate over many issues, mainly the current political scenario and its impact on art.
Manet began his career with The Absinthe Drinker, a painting depicting a debauched and solitary man amongst the shadows of the back streets of Paris. Manet had high regards for Salon and always laid great emphasis on being accepted by Salon. Spanish Guitar Player was his first painting to be accepted by Salon. However, Dejeuner sur l'herbe his most famous and most controversial painting to this date was rejected by Salon.
Manet painted modern day life, full of contradictions. Always controversial, Manet sought to record the days of his life using his own unique vision. From beggars, to prostitutes, to the bourgeoisie he sought to be true to himself and to reproduce "not great art, but sincere art."
