Gallery Description
Elliot Erwitt is a world-renowned photographer famous for his professional photography blended with humor. Erwitt was born in Paris to Russian Parents in 1928, and in 1939 he moved to America where he first studied photography in Los Angeles and then films in New York. His first job was with the US Army as an assistant photographer. In 1950, he joined Ron Stryker, Capa and Steichen his guide and mentors, at Standard Oil photo project. For some time in the middle, he also freelanced for Life, Colliers and other magazines. He then joined Magnum, started by Robert Capa in 1953 and in ’54 became a full member and a popular photojournalist. He was made the President of Magnum Photos in 1968. It is during his career with Magnum, he discovered his aptitude and talents in commercial and advertising work. He started working on many short journalistic essays and advertisements and soon became a very popular and successful advertisement photographer in the 70’s. Having had learnt films also gave him an edge. He also worked in making several features, documentaries and illustrations for TV and films.

Elliot Erwitt is still active and a name to reckon with in the world of photography. He works for magazines, industrial and client advertisements. What is remarkable is the vigor and energy that Elliot possesses. In his spare time, he is involved in creating books, exhibitions of his work for galleries and museums.

Some of his very popular works include his publication “Son of Bitch”, which made him popular as maker of funny amusing pictures. He has published several other popular books. Some of his famous documentaries and commercials he created in the 70’s include “Beauty Knows No Pain”, “Red, White and Blue Grass” and “Glassmakers of Heart” that won him an award. In the 80’s, he produced 17 comedy and satire TV programs for HOME BOX OFFICE .
