Gallery Description
Football is said to have existed in ancient China around 200 BC in the form of a game called “Tsu Chu” that was played with two 30-ft high bamboo poles acting as goals. Greece, Rome, Italy even England had their own versions of this popular ball game. Throughout the centuries, the English monarchs tried to ban this game, but were unsuccessful. In the middle of the 19th century, public schools like Harrow, Eton, Charterhouse, Winchester, Westminister, Shrewsbury etc adopted games as a vital part of their curriculum, thus bringing in order, integrity and discipline into games that were rough and lawless.
By 1848, attempts were made the Cambridge University to set up some common set of rules. On 26th October 1863, captains and representatives from the various clubs around London met to codify the rules and regulations of the game of Football. The proposal for the formation of The Football Association was made at this meeting. The association was formed and this association formalized the game Association Football, as is played around the world today.
The Football Association during its early years restricted itself to the formation of rules and organizing few inter-country friendlies. But in 1871-72, the F.A Cup was born, football’s first national tournament in which 15 clubs competed. Then in July 1885, professional football was legalized. FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football) created in France was a proof of football’s growing popularity. FIFA is still the football world’s governing body. FIFA introduced Olympic Football title in 1924 and the World Cup in 1930. Presently there are 6 confederation worldwide to organize competitions and clubs in their respective continents.
After the formation of The Football Association, the game of football has soared in popularity to a game that is being played by 250 million people worldwide and having billions of football enthusiasts. Even today, the World Cup continues to thrill and excite people all over the world, with teams like Brazil, Argentina, and Italy and their ace players.
