Gallery Description
The ancient Olympic games started in the year 776 B.C, when a cook from the nearby city of Elis won the 600 ft long stadium race. From this time, Olympic games were conducted regularly every 4 years for almost 12 centuries. Additional athletic events were added gradually over the years.

Athletics including the track and field games were popular in Rome and was also a part of the Greek athletic festivals, but their popularity declined during the middle ages. It went through a revival period in England between the 12th century and the 19th century. The first college meet was between the Oxford and Cambridge universities during the year 1864.

Athletics has been very popular in the Olympic games from the very early times. In fact, it can be called the life and spirit of Olympics. The track and field events were and continues to be one of the most popular and the most loved competition in the Olympics. The running events include foot races of various distances starting from the 100 meters dash to the marathon, which is about 42 kilometers. The Marathon, in fact is legendary. The distance kept varying over the years, and the current distance of 26.2 miles or 42 kilometers was established in the Olympic games of 1924.

The field events include long-jump, triple jump, pole vault, discus throwing, shot put and high jump. The womens athletics events were also introduced during the Olympics of 1924. Track and field games continue to be popular in Olympics and also in amateur competitions all over the world.
