Gallery Description
Baroque is an art form that originated in the 17th century. The 17th century can be called the beginning of the modern age. The word 'Baroque' means distorted. Baroque style was intended to slander or distort the art that existed in the 17th century. Baroque was born in the beginning of the 17th century and is primarily associated with religion. The Roman Catholic church was a major influence behind this art form. Baroque paintings reflect an intense sense of spirituality, energy, movement, emotion and variety. There is a distinct contrast between light and shade. This gives the paintings depiciting dramatic scenes like martyrdoms and miracles, a vitality that defies imagination. Artists often tried to depict the passion and intensity of emotions on the faces that were painted. Italian Baroque paintings were promoted by Caravaggio, Artemisia and other foreign artists.
