Gallery Description
Jan Vermeer was a 17th century Dutch painter. He was rather unknown during his time. Not much is known about his life, art education or career. His father was an art dealer and probably this set the stage for him. He is never known to have traveled out of his native except to the Hague. To this date only 35-40 works of his are known.

He however possessed a distinct style that was rather simple and calm for most part of his career especially the center phase. It is into this pahse that most of his work falls. Vermeer painted beautiful, serene and harmonious images of domestic life that are so well handled that they raise him to a different class of painter than those the world knew then. His paintings had on one or two persons in a room engaged in domestic or recreational tasks. The colors used in his paintings predominantly were yellow, blue and gray. The best part of his paintings is that despite the simplicity and realism they depicted they seemed to convey many abstract thoughts. It was in the later stages that his painting lost the magical touch and the softness and calmness they stood for so far diminished.

We have brought for you a collection of these beautiful serene paintings of Jan Vermeer. Check out our Jan Vermeer’s Gallery.
