Gallery Description
Nivia Gonzalez is one of the most famous Latin artists of her time. She has lived and worked in many US cities before settling in Austin in 2001. She is known for her unique style of painting and her work has been exhibited in more than 20 cities. She is also the recipient of many scholarships, honors and awards including “Outstanding achievement in the Arts” awarded by Mexican-American Women’s National Association, Hispanic Magazine's "Woman of the Year", and induction into the Hispanic Women in Leadership Hall of Fame.
Her work has also been displayed on book covers, and also official posters. Nivia is the artist-in-residence at La-Pena, where she provides artistitc advice, helping budding artists and promoting art among the community. Nivia’s paintings portray women, in their different forms – the ordinary peasant, the mother or even ethereal beings. Whatever be the form, the innate spirituality of these women are distinctive in her paintings. Most of the women are portrayed with their eyes downcast, which ‘represents their introspective and centered state of mind.’
