Gallery Description
Pelicans are one of the oldest birds that still exist today. Their fossils have been found dating to almost 40 millions years old! There are many types of Pelicans, mainly 2 types, the white Pelican and the brown Pelican. Pelicans are huge birds, with some birds almost 6 ft. in length. Wing spans range from 6 ft. across to up to 11 ft. Pelicans can be found on all continents except for Antarctica. Pelicans need warm weather. Their feet and pouches will get frost bitten if the temperature stays as low as 32 degrees for twelve hours or more. Pelicans, especially the brown pelicans, dive for their meals. Soaring above the water, a pelican will spy their meal and then plunge towards the water. As they descend to the water, from as high as 60 feet, the pelicans fold their wings and may flip over just before entering the water. The special air sacks under his skin on the front of his body protect them from the impact of their multiple dives in a day. The pelicans use their pouch on the bottom bill to scoop in the fish. Pelicans are one of the friendliest creatures, however they compete with fishermen for the fishes. Many times, while preying, they get killed by the fishing lines. The life expectancy of a pelican undisturbed by human beings is about 30 years. Our gallery has a collection of some exclusive Pelican paintings.
