A strange plot, garish sets, weird characters- add all of them and your cult movie is done! Cult movies appeal to a small section of the population; but the extent of their impact on this section is very strong. Cult movie watchers usually have a strong liking for all movies of this genre. Despite being low budget, critically accused as being ridiculous, cult movies continue to be made and watched by the devoted fans. What makes them tick on? It is probably the no rules; no pattern surrealistic plot and scenes that make them go on. People like to live in a world of fantasies, of the unreal; they want to see and be a part of the world they know can ever be!
Many cult movies usually involve horror or gory plots. This is probably the reason why the more sensitive audiences don’t watch them and some even detest them. Cult movies usually talk of the unusual, lead the audiences into a world that they are scared to think of. It is not surprising that cult movies are criticized severely both my movie critics as well as a large section of the audiences. There are more box-office failures than hits in this category of movies.
Yet cult moviemakers usually are passionate about movie making; they want to break from the traditional ways of movie making and experimenting with new ideas, techniques. Thus they deviate sufficiently from the stereotyped ways of making movies, and conveying stories to the movie watchers. In that sense, watching a cult movie could be a richer experience for those who understand and appreciate the technicalities involved in making the movie.
