Gallery Description
The second half of 19th century was called the positivist age. Realism is the contemporary form of art depicting the accurate and apparently objective description of the ordinary, observable world, a change especially evident in painting. In the visual arts this spirit is most obvious in the widespread rejection of Romantic subjectivism and imagination in favor of Realism - showing recognizable objects or peopleIt rejected the artificiality of both the Classicism and Romanticism in art. It brought in the new idea that ordinary people and everyday activities are worthy to be depicted as subjects in art. Artists - Realists attempted to portray the lives, appearances, problems, customs, and mores of the middle and lower classes, of the unexceptional, the ordinary, the humble, and the unadorned. They set themselves to enlighten the society as whole to the realities of the life around them - its mental attitudes, physical settings, and material conditions. Gustave Courbet of France was one of the earliest artists to start the realist movement. See our collection of realism paintings.
