Gallery Description
Reindeer, also called Caribou, are large mammals whose natural habitat is in arctic regions. They are usually found in cold regions in the world, like Scandinavian countries, Siberia and northern part of America mainly Alaska.
Reindeers are wild animals but can be and have been domesticated by humans. Such domesticated reindeers help humans especially in the arctic region in transporting. They are used as pack animals, to carry heavy items, and as draft animals to pull sleighs and carts. Some people even ride reindeer! Reindeers are hunted for their meat and skin. Their hides are used for making tents, boots and clothing.
Reindeer differ from other types of deer in that both male and female reindeer grow antlers, although female antlers are smaller and simpler than those of the males. What is unique is that no two antlers are the same!
Some special characteristics of Reindeers:
Reindeers mainly feed on Lichens, a moss, in winters. They eat grasses and tree saplings in summers.
They are always found in herds, and they run very fast. They migrate to great distances in such herds.
Reindeers have unique hairs, which trap air providing them with excellent insulation and keep them buoyant in the water. This makes them very strong swimmers.
Reindeer use their antlers and feet to protect themselves and to fight for mates during rutting season in the fall. They drop off their antlers every spring and get new ones. Their antlers are used for artworks and other products.
Reindeers are beautiful and elegant and Santa’s favorite team for traveling with during Christmas! Take a look at these wonderful animals in our Reindeer Gallery!
