Gallery Description
Born in the North Carolina in 1912, Romare Bearden moved to Harlem, near New York City, where he grew up and lived most part of his life. He has however lived in different parts and it was in south, where his grandparents lived that he developed much of his interest in art. Bearden studied science, math, art and theology all with equal fervor but it was art that he was most interested in.
Bearden struggled from the very beginning to find his vision as an artist. As a student, he studied with the German artist George Grosz, who encouraged him to incorporate social and political commentary in his art. Bearden became a professional artist and started drawing political cartoons for the Baltimore Afro-American. From here he shifted his focus to paintings; he began by studying Old Master paintings, and tried to understand the basic structural elements of acclaimed works of art. He still struggled and his interests kept varying. It was then that he began to work in Collage, for which he is most famous.
Bearden was an artist, educator, author, theorist, and a benefactor who helped young African American artists establish their careers. During his own career that lasted for almost half a century, Bearden produced approximately two thousand works. Besides his popular collages, he has also completed paintings, drawings, monotypes, and edition prints; murals for public spaces, record album jackets, magazine and book illustrations, and costume and set designs for theater and ballet.
