All of us have collected teddy bears as kids. Some of us fancy them even as adults. The hobby of teddy bear collection is known as Arctophily; arctos for bear and philos for love.
The first teddy bear toy was created by Margarete Steiff, but initially could not sell anything. Then, the story of the American President- Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, refusing to shoot a Bear cub while hunting spread making these toys very popular. In fact this gave them their name “teddy”- after the great president. Since then the teddy bear has become a symbol of innocence and affection. "I don't think my name is likely to be worth much in the toy bear business, but you are welcome to use it."- said Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt.
The teddy bear celebrated its 100th B’day in 2002. In these 100 years, many manufactures have come up with different varieties of bears. Newer techniques for making these stuffed toys have come up. Different types of textiles are used and many innovations have been introduced in making them today. And the teddy remains as popular as ever, if not more!
