Gallery Description
Panthera tigris, the Latin for Tigers, are the biggest in the cat family. They live in wet, humid and hot jungles as well as icy cold forests. Tigers are an endangered species. The five subspecies of Tigers seen today are the Siberian, Indochinese, South China, Bengal, and the Sumatran. The Three subspecies that are now extinct are: the Bali, Javan, and Caspian Tigers. Some facts about Tigers: Tigers have excellent Binocular and color vision. At night, the tiger can see 6 times better than humans. The length of a Tigers tail is 3 to 4 feet long, about half as long as its body. They use their tails for balance when running through fast turns. Tigers also use their tails to communicate with other tigers. Tigers have their own territories, which they mark by spraying a special mixture of urine and scent gland secretions. They also leave behind scratch marks on trees. Tigers that live in the wild, live to about 10 years old and those in zoos can live to about 25 years. Tiger cubs are born blind and weigh only about 2 to 3 pounds (1 kg), depending on the subspecies. Tigers are great swimmers. Siberian Tigers are the Largest and can weigh close to 700 pounds and measure close to 11 feet from head to tail. The South China and Indochinese’s are the Smaller Tigers They may weigh just over 300 pounds and measure little over 8 feet long. Our gallery has a collection of paintings of Tigers of all the subspecies.
