Gallery Description
Henri de Toulouse Lautrec -(1864-1901)
Toulouse Lautrec was born into an aristocratic family in France. His father was rich and eccentric and his mom completely devoted to her only son. Lautrec began drawing and painting at the age of 10, and realized that that’s where his interests lie. Lautrec was physically weak as a child; by the time he was 14 years, he broke both his legs and could never grow. This physical stature of his gave him a complex and besides his mother, the only other way he could vent his feelings out were through his paintings.
His abnormality prevented him from having the regular life that a Parisian aristocrat would have had. He devoted himself wholly to his art and through it experienced all the things he missed his in life. He stayed in the Montmartre section of Paris, the center of the cabaret entertainment and bohemian life; he made lithographs or set down on canvas the spectacles of circuses, dance halls and nightclubs, racetracks et al. To guard himself from the ridicule of the crowd, Lautrec began to drink heavily. This affected his health heavily. He was confined to a sanatorium for rehabilitation but was never able to give up alcohol. Shortly afterwards he died. Even today the great artist’s paintings are in huge demand. The most famous work of his is the ‘Moulin Rouge series’. Our gallery brings you a collection of Toulouse Lautrec’s paintings.
