Cigarettes and posters advertising cigarettes were quite popular even during the 1800s. During those times, it was considered to be vulgar for magazines to carry ads of any sort. And so majority of advertising was done through colorful posters and signs that was would be displayed outdoors. In spite of these, some of the magazines carried cigarette ads, which shows the popularity of cigarettes and also the class of people whom the cigarettes were targeted at. Wm. S. Kimball was one of the earliest cigarette makers to market their cigarettes to the literate market.
The advertisements during the 1800s and also the early 1900s looked very similar to the ads of the current day, with a prominent brand name, sufficient text copy and an aesthetic graphic. Cigarettes were also marketed to the theater-going crowd. Between the acts, it was quite common for the men to smoke and the women to engage in small talk. The cigarettes of Murad were quite famous at that time, but were affordable only to the high class. Murad continued to grow over the years with different ad campaigns. The Imperiales cigarettes marketed by John Ballman Company, Fatima a Turkish blend cigarette were the famous brands of those times.
Then before the 1920s, the look and feel of the advertisements changed. The ads featured beautiful and elegant sketches of women or men, endorsing the cigarettes. The time following the First World war was called the roaring twenties. That was the time that women rejected the flamboyant clothing of the Victorian times and donned masculine outfits. Marlboro, who would be leader for years to come, caught onto the opportunity and marketed cigarettes to women. After World War II the world of advertising changed completely with more sleek and sophisticated ad copies and images.
Cigarette advertisements have changed considerably over the years, according to the tastes and culture of people during those time periods. It has featured famous personalities like movie stars and sports persons.
