Travel has fascinated man from very early days. The idea of seeing exquisite new places, setting foot on untrodden mountains, enjoying the culture and cuisine of different places…..they having driving men to long voyages and tours from time immemorial. From the time advertisements started becoming popular, there has been advertisements popularizing specific countries and even cities.
Air France was one of the first few to advertise their country and it’s beautiful tourist locations. There were many more travel advertisements featuring different road and railways, places like South Africa, Rome, Paris, India and many other exquisite locations. The beauty of these travel posters were in their sketches. The cities like Nice, Bologna, Lourdes were depicted beautifully in these advertisements. The sketches of people and places that were typical of the advertisements of that time were seen in these travel posters also.
The advertisements tried to capture the mood of these tourist locations through their sketches. Whether it was Antibes, with its beautiful beaches and cheerful atmosphere or Newyork, with its busy streets and shops or Cuba- the Holiday Isle of the Tropics, they were also depicted in all their beauty and splendour in these vintage travel posters.
