Volley Ball Paintings Gallery

Gallery Description
The year 2005 marks the 110th anniversary of the game of Volleyball. The sport originated in the United States of America, created by William G. Morgan during the year 1895. He was an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). He decided to combine the styles of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball to create a game for the businessmen who did not want a game as physical as basketball. The game was at first called mintonette, and Morgan borrowed the net from Tennis raising it 6ft, 6 inches above the floor, just above the height of an average man.

But it took 5 years for a ball to be made, especially made for the game. The rules and the styles of the game of volleyball continued to change over the years. By the early 1900s, the game became quite popular with the first YMCA National Championships being held in Brooklyn, New York where 27 teams from 11 states were represented. IN 1928, the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA, now the USA Volleyball) was formed, opening the ground for the non-YMCA teams.

The beach Volleyball games became popular during the mid 1900s and it was introduced to the Olympics in Tokyo during the year 1964. But it took 20 years for the US to win their first gold at the Olympics, in Los Angeles, 1984. The game is now becoming as popular in the US as on the global scale, where it is second only to soccer among the participation sports. Today there are more than 800 million players worldwide who play volleyball, about 46 million of them being Americans.

The game continues to gain popularity all over the world, especially the game of beach volleyball. Our gallery brings to you some beautiful snapshots of this game of Volleyball.
