Gallery Description
Wrestling has been a popular game throughout recorded history. Origins of the game can be traced back 15,000 years to the cave drawings in France. In ancient Greece, wrestling was prominent as depicted by the legend and also the literature of those times. The early Olympic games included wrestling competition were quite brutal resulting in serious injuries to the participants. In spite of all this, the game was a very popular and supreme one. Romans also borrowed the sport from Greece but without its brutality. During the middle ages, wrestling was adopted by many of the royal houses including France, Japan and England.

Early American settlers brought this game with them from England. Amateur wrestling competition became quite popular among the native Americans also and soon become the most loved activity fairs, celebrations and military exercises. Of the old wrestling styles, the only one that survives is the catch-as-catch-can and it has evolved into the collegiate wrestling.

Wrestling made its Olympic debut in 708 B.C as a very crude game. It died out of the Olympic games during the dark ages, but was considered by the organizers of the 1896 Olympics when they searched for sports with roots in antiquity. The first organized wrestling tournament was held in New York in 1888. And the first wrestling competition in the Modern Olympic games was held in 1904 in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Modern day wrestling is a highly competitive sport that requires the strength, alertness, resiliency and, above all, agility and quickness in the participants. Olympic and World Championships currently follow two different styles, the freestyle and the Greco-Roman one, freestyle being the most commonly followed one. International competitions are governed by Fˇdˇration Internationale des Luttes Associˇs (FILA). USA Wrestling is the governing body for wrestling in America.

The size and thickness of the wrestling mat, the time duration of the bouts, the conduct of the participants during wrestling, the points awarded, the forbidden tactics are all governed by rules that have been set down clearly and precisely.

Our gallery of wrestling paintings brings to you the famous wrestlers and heroes from all over the world.
